About the bird camera

The bird camera is located on a peninsula west of the Ilene nature reserve in Tønsberg. It is owned and operated by BirdLife Norway, department Vestfold. The area around the peninsula probably has the highest density of wetland birds in Vestfold. You can either watch live video, or rewind up to 24 hours.

Visitor Center Våtmark Ilene can use the camera in its teaching. On special occasions and for various projects, access to the camera can be granted after contacting the board of BirdLife Vestfold. All images/recordings can be used as long as the source is stated. Paths, residential buildings and other places where people stay are cordoned off in accordance with the rules of the Norwegian Data Protection Authority.

On July 1, 2020, the State Administrator of Vestfold and Telemark transferred ownership, operation and maintenance of the bird camera (free of charge) to BirdLife Norway, department Vestfold. Since then, we have regularly installed new cameras. In the spring of 2021, a "live streaming function" was connected to the camera. This means that anyone who wishes will be able to watch live video directly from the reserve on the website or YouTube. The current camera was installed on October 10, 2025.

The webcam is a ptz camera, Axis Q 6358-LE. It has 4K (UHD) image quality, and has built-in laser focus. It can be rotated 360 degrees and tilted up/down. In addition, the camera has IR light and an optical zoom of 31x.

The camera is controlled almost daily, throughout the year, by the Ilene Wetland Visitor Center and BirdLife Vestfold. The control itself takes place according to specific rules and guidelines. The operators log in with a username and password, and are required to edit good recordings, as well as to save these on BirdLife Vestfold's own hard drive. Many recordings are posted on YouTube, as well as the Facebook pages of the wetland center and BirdLife Vestfold. In addition, you can find more recordings/pictures here. All posts are usually accompanied by explanatory text.

The Ilene Nature Reserve is a vital charging station for migratory birds. Here the migratory birds find both food and rest.
